Teaching

Courses, a textbook, and twenty years of Ph.D. students and postdocs.

Courses

  • 2019–Classical Mechanics and Thermodynamics; Mathematical Physics for Geosciences; Condensed Matter PhysicsUniversity of Pisa
  • 2017–2019PlasmonicsUniversity of Pisa
  • 2015, 2016Science of graphene and related layered materials, in the Master of Research of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Graphene TechnologyUniversity of Cambridge
  • 2007–2019Quantum many-body theory, every year, for advanced undergraduates and first-year graduate students in physics and chemistryScuola Normale Superiore, Pisa

Textbook

M. Polini and M. P. Tosi, Many-body physics in condensed matter systems (Edizioni della Normale, Pisa, 2006). Born from the many-body course at the Scuola Normale, it is written for advanced students and for researchers who want a way into the field.

Students

Over the years I have supervised more than fifteen Ph.D. students and as many postdocs, at the Scuola Normale Superiore, the University of Pisa, IIT and Manchester. Many now run their own groups.

Where some of them are now

  • Alessandro Principi University of Manchester
  • Andrea Tomadin University of Pisa
  • Francesco M. D. Pellegrino University of Catania
  • Dario Ferraro University of Genoa
  • Marco Gibertini University of Modena and Reggio Emilia
  • Habib Rostami University of Bath
  • Amit Agarwal IIT Kanpur
  • Matteo Carrega CNR, Genoa

Positions

I welcome motivated students and postdocs with a strong background in quantum mechanics and many-body theory. Write to me with a short CV and a few lines on what you would like to work on.

Ph.D. positions in Pisa are offered through the doctoral programmes of the University of Pisa and of the Scuola Normale Superiore; some projects are run together with Planckian.
